Clinical Pilates uses a number of original and modified Pilates exercises and is given on a prescriptive, individual basis. It is instructed by a qualified physiotherapist after a musculoskeletal or injury assessment. At Physio Effect, we deliver mat work, small equipment and reformer based Clinical Pilates on a 1:1 basis and small group classes as part of your rehabilitation. This may be suggested as the most effective form of treatment and rehabilitation for your condition by your physiotherapist on assessment.

Traditional Pilates is a conditioning exercise programme that targets the deep postural muscles of the abdomen, spine, hips and shoulders to improve overall strength, flexibility, movement control and posture. It was originally developed in the 1920’s by Joseph Pilates to improve the abilities of the dancers he worked with. Since then, Pilates has become much more mainstream and popular as an exercise regime used by recreational and professional athletes, pre-/postnatal women and for rehabilitation purposes.

Clinical Pilates vs Traditional Pilates

The difference between Clinical Pilates and the traditional Pilates method is that you will be firstly assessed by a Pilates-trained Physiotherapist and then have a bespoke programme written for you.

During the session, you will be given Pilates-based exercises to do specific to your individual needs. This is usually a pre-habilitation or rehabilitation programme relevant to an existing injury or condition that will be discussed at an initial Physiotherapy Assessment ahead of you starting your block of classes.

Our classes are small group classes with a maximum of 5 people.

BENEFITS OF CLINCAL PILATES INCLUDE:

  • Keeping the body moving and feeling well.

  • Improved deep abdominal and pelvic floor muscle strength, tone and function

  • Helping to manage low back and neck pain.

  • Overall body strength and conditioning

  • Improved posture

  • Improved flexibility and balance

  • Helping to manage stress

  • Improved sporting performance

What to bring/ what to wear

Where Clinical Pilates is not a cardio-based exercise class, it can sometimes be strenuous and most of our clients feel that wearing activewear is the most comfortable and practical for them. Shoes are not required but for hygiene purposes, it is a requirement to wear socks - either normal socks or grippy Pilates/Yoga socks.

A bottle of water is recommended as well as a notebook for anyone wishing to make a note of exercises to practice at home.

All equipment and mats are supplied and there is a changing room/ showering facilities in the EDA gym which houses the Physio Effect Clinic and Studio at Borron Street

If you would like to continue your practice at home, we have a number of products available to buy.

What to expect from the session

If you have a 1:1 session booked, it will be just you and the instructor in the studio. If it’s a class, there will be a maximum of 5 participants, all working on their individual prescribed programmes.

Clinical Pilates Classes are 60 minutes in length.

1:1 Clinical Pilates sessions are 45 minutes in length.

When you arrive for your class, please inform your physiotherapist Pilates instructor of any important information including changes to your condition/ health, any new goals and how you may have responded to your previous session.

We use a variety of Pilates props and equipment from different sized balls, resistance bands, Pilates circles and the Reformer machine

The best outcomes for participants are when the sessions are attended as regularly as possible, so with a block booking, you get the most consistent service and the greatest chance of rehabilitating your injury. As such, we have a “use-by” period for our block of classes i.e. you have the flexibility to miss 4 x sessions out of a prepaid block. This is:

  • 10 weeks for a 6 class block

  • 16 weeks for a 12 class block

If you do need to cancel a class, we do need at least 24 hours notice for you to carry-over that class or full payment of the class will be taken out of your class credit.

When are the classes?

Our Clinical Pilates classes run on a Monday at 5pm, 6pm and 7pm and on a Wednesday at 5pm. The classes are rolling blocks rather than fixed dates so you can start any time.

*Please note that if the classes are full, you may have to be placed on a waiting list.
